Traveling is mostly fun, but there are some elements that are less exciting. Take flight delays, for example. There’s nothing that’ll dampen your travel excitement more than making it through check-in and security, only to discover that you’ll be spending several hours more in the airport than you anticipated all because your flight has been delayed.
In those moments, it’s best to adopt the traveling mindset of simply going with the flow. You’ll only cause yourself misery if you allow yourself to get annoyed! Plus, there are a bunch of activities you can do that’ll help the time to fly by. We’ve put together a list of some of the best time-passing activities below.

Journal
We’d recommend journaling even when you’re not traveling. After all, there are a lot of benefits that can come from putting pen to paper!
Journaling while traveling helps you to retain as much information about your trip as possible. While you might think that your memory will offer a full — and true — recollection of your adventure, the truth is that eventually, the intensity of the memories will begin to fade. Having your thoughts, impressions, and opinions all there on the page to read can help to keep the trip alive even many years later.
Sort Through Your Photographs
You’ll likely have taken a ton of photographs and videos on your travels. But let’s be honest — the vast majority of them won’t be social media-worthy. Now that you’ve got a few hours to play with, you’ll have the perfect opportunity to go through all of your photographs and figure which ones are great, and which ones ain’t. You can also use the time to make a few adjustments to your photographs — there are plenty of excellent photo editing apps that’ll ensure your images make a powerful punch when they’re uploaded onto Instagram.
Smartphone Entertainment
The smartphone has revolutionized all aspects of travel, including how we spend our time during a long delay. Provided you have an outlet where you can charge your phone, you can spend the entirety of your layover on your device. You can use the time to speak to friends, listen to podcasts, or even play games. Traveling by yourself? Then look at playing single-player online games, such as blackjack or solitaire. If you’re traveling with a companion, then multiplayer games such as pool or checkers will keep you both entertained.
Traveling with your tablet in tow? A long delay is a perfect opportunity to catch up with the episodes of your favorite series that you may have missed when you’ve been on the road.
Explore the Airport
People seem to have the idea that airports are boring. Yet, while they’re typically the most boring part of going on an adventure, they’re not exactly dull. In fact, the best airports in the world are anything but dull! So use your time to explore everything that the airport has to offer — from shops to pick up last-minute souvenirs to enjoying a meal, there’ll be something for you to do.
