Neutral colors like white, gray, beige, navy and black are often seen as safe options when decorating a home. They can often increase the resale value of a property and make an interior feel clean. However, on their own, these colors can also be a little dull.
Adding small pops of vibrant color to otherwise neutral colored rooms can help to make your home feel less sterile and more exciting. There are many ways in which you can add pops of color. Below are just a few great examples.
Curtains
Colorful curtains are a great way to make a neutral colored room feel more lively. Add some yellow curtains to provide a sunny feel, baby blue curtains for a calming effect or red curtains to add a burst of energy.
Rugs
If you’ve got white or gray flooring, consider adding a pop of color with a brightly colored rug. This could be a patterned rug or a single block color. On a hard stone or concrete floor, consider a colorful deep pile rug to also add a burst of texture and warmth.
Cushions/pillows
Got a neutral colored sofa? Add some vibrancy by throwing some brightly colored cushions on it. You could buy multiple cushions of the same color, or even go multicolored. Similarly, you can jazz up a plain white or gray bed with some colorful pillows.
Wall art
A painting on a wall can be an effective way to add a pop of color. The subject of the painting will affect the mood of the room, so think carefully about what type of painting you choose. Peaceful landscape paintings are great for creating a calming atmosphere in a living room, while a vibrant abstract painting in a dining room can energize dinner guests and encourage conversation.
Houseplants
Houseplants literally add life to a room. They are also a great way to add natural pops of color. You can add houseplants to any room in your home providing that there is enough natural light coming in. Houseplants can even be added to bathrooms – however you’ll typically need to consider plants that love humidity and don’t require too much direct sunlight.
Feature walls
Rather than painting all the walls of a room in a neutral color, why not consider painting three of the walls a neutral color and the fourth wall a more vibrant color? This is known as a feature wall and can be a great way to add a pop of color to a room. You can hire a painting company to do this for you. Wallpapering a single wall is another way to create a feature wall.
Accent furniture
A single piece of furniture that stands out from the rest is known as accent furniture. In a living room, it’s possible to add a pop of color by juxtaposing a brightly colored armchair with a neutral colored sofa suite. This accent color could pair with another pop of color within the room such as the curtains or a rug.
