Mold can be a big problem if you’ve got it in your home – it looks terrible, it’s bad for your health, and it can cause damage to your property and everything inside your home, as well. Before moving to Germany, I never had to deal with mold. Now, I feel like I have learned all about it since living here.
You might think that mold just happens and there’s nothing that can change that, but, that isn’t true! There are plenty of things you can do to avoid mold, so let’s take a look at what they are and you can be prepared, just in case.
Spot The Problem Areas
When you want to make sure you can prevent mold as much as possible, it’s wise to identify the areas in your home that could be problems if there was a water issue – in other words, the problems where your mold is most likely to stem from.
The most usual places for mold to pop up would be the bathroom, kitchen, basement, attic, and essentially any room that’s got poor ventilation. If you’ve got any signs of moisture or leaks in these places, mold is very likely to follow, so checking all is well makes sense. This is also the perfect time to check your roof and call in a roofer if it needs to be repaired – a few loose tiles here and there could mean water gets inside, and that’s the ideal way for mold to take hold.
Control Moisture Levels
As we’ve said, and as you probably know, it’s moisture that leads to mold, so controlling the moisture levels in your home is a great idea and an ideal way to avoid mold where possible. To do this, you’ll need to have an exhaust fan or extractor fan in all your bathrooms, for example, and ideally in your kitchen too – these are the rooms where moisture collects most, just because of what they’re used for, so you can use these fans to get rid of the moisture before it causes any damage.
Plus, if you see any leaks, you need to fix them right away, even if they’re not big or don’t look as though they’re causing any damage. The fact is that any excess water in your home could lead to mold, so preventing it fast is essential.
Keep Your Home Clean
Although most of the issue with mold comes from water and general moisture and dampness, mold spores themselves can be a problem too, and they can settle even when it’s not wet. That’s why cleaning your home on a regular basis is a good idea, as you’ll be able to remove those mold spores before they cause damage.
Once again, cleaning the bathroom and kitchen as often as you’ve got time for is the best solution when it comes to mold because that’s where the spores are most likely to be, but cleaning the whole house is beneficial too if you want to stay healthy, so it’s worth coming up with a cleaning routine to make sure it happens.
