As parents, we only want the best for our kids. We want them to be successful and engaged in the world around them. But let’s face it, technology is a huge part of society and it can be both a blessing and a curse. I know I have certainly resorted to screen time when I needed the kids to be occupied… But then I feel guilty. So how do you be smart about kids’ tech use? Here are some tips:
Set Boundaries:
Setting boundaries for your kids’ use of digital devices is really important. Establishing clear expectations about when and where these technologies can be used, as well as how long and how often, will help not only your child, but I find that it helps me feel less guilty about the time they are using tech – because I get to determine when and how long it happens for. So create a schedule that outlines when and where the device can be used and stick to it.
Monitor Devices:
Another important step parents should take is to monitor their kids’ digital devices. Let’s be real… the internet can be a scary place and I worry about this all the time for when my kids get older. Using a tool like setapp.com can help you monitor what your child is seeing and doing online.
Make sure to filter out the dangerous or inappropriate content by using parental control settings. Monitor social media accounts and regularly check your child’s activity, such as talking with friends at school or playing games online. This will ensure that your child is safe while engaging with digital devices.
Encourage Technology Responsibility:
Explain to your children why it is important for them to be responsible regarding technology. Remind them that excessive use of digital devices can lead to addiction, poor academic performance, and physical health issues. Discuss the dangers of cyberbullying and underage internet activity. Reiterate your expectations about appropriate behavior on the internet and emphasize that they should have permission before downloading apps or engaging with strangers online. And most importantly, make sure your child knows that they can always come to you with any questions or concerns they have – in case the need arrises.
Incorporate Offline Activities:
It’s easy for kids to get lost in their screens, so encourage them to engage in offline activities as well. For example, schedule outdoor play time, join a sports team or take up a hobby together like playing board games or painting. It’s also a good idea to plan family activities such as nature walks and zoo trips that don’t involve technology.
Model Healthy Technology Habits:
Don’t forget to lead by example, too. As adults, we must be mindful of our technology use and demonstrate responsible digital habits. Trust me, I know how hard this is and I have to remind myself of this often. In our house we keep your devices away from the dinner table and enjoy each others company, but decide what works best for you and your family!
You can also use technology to encourage healthy habits. For example, if your child is struggling with staying focused on their homework or chores, try using a task-tracking app that rewards them for completing tasks or setting reminders and timers to help them stay on track. My toddler loves when I set my phone alarm with a two minute warning when she has to get ready for bed. She knows when my phone goes off, it’s time to clean up and get our PJs on! Technology can be an incredible tool for learning and entertainment, when it is used in the right context.
Help Kids Recognize Online Dangers:
Unfortunately, with the use of technology come certain dangers, such as cyberbullying and online predators. As a parent, it is important to talk to your child about these risks and help them become more aware of them.
Make sure they understand what constitutes inappropriate behavior or language and be firm about your expectations. Teach them how to spot potential threats or scams so they can recognize when something isn’t right. Remind them that if they feel uncomfortable or uneasy about any situation or person online, they should talk to you or another trusted adult immediately.
How to Be Smart About Kids’ Tech Use
It is important to recognize the value of technology and its positive potential, but also be mindful of its potential for overuse. As a recap on how to be smart about kids’ tech use: Model healthy habits yourself, talk openly with your children about their digital device usage and set boundaries around when and how long they can use devices. Finally, make sure your children are aware of potential online dangers so they can stay safe and use technology responsibly. No matter what screen time looks like in your family, know that you are doing a great job!
