Moving to a new home can be an exciting experience. But, when you’re moving long distances, it can also prove to be a super stressful one. Trust me, I have done multiple cross-country and international moves! One of the most critical tasks is to ensure that your belongings make it to their new home safely. To do this, there are some steps you can take to ensure the safety of your items during the move. Here are some ideas on how to protect your belongings during a long distance move.
#1 Take Inventory Of Your Items
Taking an inventory of all the items you will be moving is crucial for keeping track of everything throughout the process. It also will make the first few days at your new home much easier, so you know where everything is.
Make sure you document each item and its condition before packing it into boxes or crates. This will help you keep tabs on whether any items become damaged during transit and also serves as proof if anything does get lost or stolen at any point during the move that you can then report to your insurance.
#2 Pack Carefully And Securely
When packing your items for a long-distance move, make sure that you take extra care and use sturdy boxes or containers. Keep in mind how much weight each box will be carrying so that you don’t overload them and risk them bursting open during transit (or hurting your back!).
It is also essential to seal up each box securely using strong packing tape so that nothing falls out or gets lost en route. Additionally, label every box with what it contains and where it should go in your new home once delivered.
#3 Use Protective Wrapping Materials
Make sure that whatever materials you use provide adequate protection against any knocks and jolts that may occur while en route. Wrap delicate items such as glassware or electronics in protective materials like bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or tissue paper before securely packing them in boxes or crates. Things like individual sleeves for plates were really helpful for us, they are super easy to use and protect each plate. These can be found at most home or hardware stores.
Special cartons are also available that protect certain types of fragile objects, such as mirrors and picture frames, from becoming damaged due to knocks and bumps during transport. And if you are moving TVs – transport them in their original box, if possible. If you no longer have that, then you can also purchase TV boxes for moving.
#4 Consider Professional Movers
For more valuable possessions like works of art or antiques, consider hiring professional movers who specialize in handling these kinds of items carefully and securely. They have trained staff and special tools designed to protect these fragile objects from damage during long distance moving. This way, you can rest assured knowing that your most valued possessions are being handled by experts who know how best to pack them safely for shipping without risking any damage occurring en route.
Or if you are short on time, or unable to move yourself (like I was when I relocated from Iowa, USA to Germany when I was 32 weeks pregnant.) Then it can be great to hire help to do the move for you!
#5 Insurance Coverage
Last but not least, make sure you have adequate insurance coverage covering all your possessions should anything get damaged during your move; this way, you won’t be left out-of-pocket if something gets lost, damaged, or stolen along the way. Be sure to check what type of coverage is included with your moving package before signing on the dotted line. This will provide extra peace of mind and ensure you’re fully protected in case of any mishaps during the move.
By following these steps on how to protect your belongings during a long distance move, you can rest assured knowing that your belongings will be safe and sound when they arrive at their new home. Planning ahead is key to a successful long-distance move, so start organizing as soon as possible to ensure everything goes according to plan. Happy moving!
